How to Rename Your Printer
Purpose:
Give your home room printer a unique name so it is easily identifiable amongst your growing list of printers from connecting to other classrooms.
Guide:
This article will show you how to rename a printer on your computer. This will help you keep tabs on which printer is which, since after subbing or connecting to enough different classrooms you will have a long list of printers. Keep in mind that printers that are connected to our network typically cannot be renamed since the names are usually determined by our server.
Here’s an example of what you might see:
Above you can see that there are two printers both with “HP LaserJet P1102w” in the name. Depending on what model of printer is more prevalent in your school, you may either see too many HP 1102w printers, or too many Xerox B210/Xerox B230 printers, etc.
Let’s move on to the first step in solving this problem:
Step 1:
Go to the search bar on your desktop and type in “Printers & Scanners”
Click on or press enter on Printers & Scanners to open it.
Step 2:
You will see this window open:
Look for the printer that you think is the right one. An easy way to tell is it will likely not have “Offline” under it, and the printer name should somewhat match the model label visible on the printer.
Click on the printer name, then click on “Manage”.
Step 3:
Now click on “Printer properties”.
Step 4:
The printer properties window will open. At the top of the “General” tab you will see a text field with the printer's name. You can edit this field to whatever you want. I recommend using your room number or “My HomeRoom Printer”.
Once you have changed the name, click “Apply” and then click “OK”.
Step 5:
Go back to the document you want to print. If you still had the print dialog open, close it and re-open it to force it to grab the new printer name.
You can now see that the printer is renamed and can be easily identified amongst the growing sea of printers on your laptop.
